Exciting underground experience at Matsuda Shonyudo

Last year, the Experience and Activity Program was launched by the Ginoza Village Tourism Council.  The limestone-cave experience is one of these programs. The Matsuda shonyudo (limestone cave) is a total of 200 meters long. The tour starts with a prayer and a safety orientation with the guide at an old grave in the entrance area. Now, let’s go explore the cave!

Just check in at Matsuda Experience Center and receive helmet, light, boots and gloves for no charge. Coveralls are also available with 500 yen.

The Matsuda limestone-cave was formed about 100,000 years ago. It extends from the hill on the west side of Matsuda area to eastern coast. Some areas inside the cave are 12 meters in height and spacious, while others are too low to stand up in. There are many kinds of mineral formations such as an eight-meter flowstone, limestone dam and stalagmites to be seen. Just below the entrance, you will notice a spacious room called Uunumee Cave.

In the cave, only limited modifications have been done to preserve the natural structure. There are no paved areas. You must follow carry a light and follow the guide’s directions. In the early stage of the course, you will follow an underground stream. You will now be 1.3 meters beneath surface. Please walk carefully.

Limestone “curtain.” This is a very dynamic view. You can see magnificent views like this here and there in the cave.

The cave called “the straw.” The icicle-shaped formation was thousands of years in the making.

This tube almost touches the ground; thousands of years from now, it might.

four-to-six-centimeter centipedes can be seen on the ceiling.

good chance to meet goniurosaurus kuroiwa (kuroiwa gecko). Today, none showed up. This type of gecko is 1.5 – 1.8 centimeters in length.

During the tour, Japanese horseshoe bats, camel crickets and spiders can also be seen. Eels and shrimps inhabit the underground stream.

The “ponpoko stone“ is a good luck for love or marriage

I went through wet areas, flat sandy areas, wide, areas, narrow areas, high, low and so on… The exciting journey finished at gravesite called “Kushi”. The sun was shining brightly.
