Popular Ogimi Village noodle shop “Touge no Mendokoro Esu no Hana” combines Ogimi soba flour and grandma’s warm service

This popular soba, located in Taiho, Ogimi Village is known for using locally harvested flour to make their soba. Just look for Ogimi junior high school on route 58, turn right and drive to the top of the hill. The place might be hard to find but there are reasons why the small, hidden shop is always crowded.
Ogimi is famous for soba flour. One of the reasons for the popularity of Esu no Hana is that they make fresh soba for each customer. The grain is ground, pounded and the dough cut and boiled right in the shop.
“Fresh soba has the best flavor,” said the owner, Takashi Nakajima. I visited the shop as a reporter, tried this fresh made soba and found it much more flavorful and tastier than I expected.
The most popular item is the Zaru Soba Set (1,000 yen). The set comes with six small side dishes and deep fried tofu. Tempura is served for free! I thought they should call it the Tempura Soba Set.
The tempura is a selection of king oyster mushrooms, green beans, zucchini, local shiitake mushrooms, pea pods, carrots and fuchiba (mugwort) leaves. Very crunchy outside and it does not feel oily in your mouth. Sanae who is in charge of tempura uses only fresh and healthy oil for tempura
Surprisingly, they served me more tempura! The next tempura selection contained goya (bitter melon), Moroccan beans and celery. Twelve different kinds of vegetable tempura are usually served with the soba. “I am grateful to people who find us and come a long way to eat our soba,” Nakajima said. “I like to welcome them with lots of food.” In fact all the customers that I could see eating soba and tempura looked very happy.
In addition to the Zaru Soba set with all that tempura, they also have the Omakase Course for 1,500 yen. Omakase means chef’s choice.
The warm welcome and delicious food make a great impression.
