Finally arrived at Naha Airport! Many people might feel hungry by a sense of safety at that moment. After checking in and leaving your baggage at the hotel, it might be a good idea to eat something before go sightseeing. It is important what to eat first in Okinawa, so many people might think that you want to eat Okinawan food. This time, we are going to list 3 restaurants that you can fill your stomach first.

1. Okinawa’s Iconic Food “Pork Tamago Onigiri”

If you were arriving at Naha Airport during breakfast hour, let’s head to “Pork Tamago Onigiri Main Shop” near Makishi Public Market. Pork tamago onigiri is a popular Okinawan food. It is actually a sandwiched Spam, thin omelet, and steamed rice together. It is available at supermarkets and convenience stores in Okinawa, but there was no Pork tamago onigiri only restaurant until this restaurant was open.

A variety of onigiri fixings include abura miso, leaf mustard, kelp, salmon, Tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce), fried shrimp, and ginger pork are on the menu. The staffs start making it as soon as they get the order, so customers can eat freshly made onigiri. Popular “Fried Pork Tamago Onigiri” has a crunchy texture, fresh cabbage, and melty cheese. Most of all, it is delicious! You will be full just by eating it.

Reasonable 5 pcs of onigiri (1,000 yen) and 4 pcs of onigiri with a drink of your choice (1,000 yen) are good for take-out. How about ordering either one and bring it to a park or beach, or when you go driving?

2. “A&W,” Beloved Fast-food Restaurant in Okinawa

There are 26 branches of “A&W” in Mainland Okinawa and remote islands. The first branch was opened in Yagibaru, Kitanakagusuku Village in 1963. It was the first fast-food restaurant in Japan, and it has been loved by Okinawan locals since its opening. The first A&W was opened in Lodi, California, U.S.A. in 1919. It was originally opened as a walk-up root beer stand (root beer is a non-alcoholic drink which mixed with herbs, bark, and essence of roots).

Menus include “Teriyaki Burger” with thick patty and teriyaki sauce, and “Melty Rich” with 2 patties and 2 cheeses, bacon, and creamy sauce. Also, a big-size “The A&W Burger” has beef, lettuce, tomato, cream cheese, pepper pork, and onion ring!

“Curly Fries” is perfect for a side dish.

You can also try the unique flavor of “Root Beer.” Okinawa is the only place in Japan where you can enjoy eating at A&W. It is located along Kokusai Street, and another branch is located on Kokusai Street near Palette Kumoji. How about stopping by either branch or both?

3. Let’s Eat Okinawa Soba at a 60-year-old Traditional Okinawan Style House

A restaurant “Shimujo” is located on the top of hill in Shuri, Naha City. This 60ish-year-old house / restaurant is a registered tangible cultural property. It features a red tiled roof and stone pavement, and also hinpun (a fence to hide house) is located in the same property to repel evil spirits. The restaurant is surrounded by unique Okinawan greeneries, so customers can experience the good-old Okinawan atmosphere here.

A combo with Soki (pork rib) Soba, Juicy (seasoned rice), 2 side dishes, and Jimami (peanut) Tofu is recommended at this restaurant. The characteristic of soba is chewy thin noodles, and rich flavored soup with pork broth and bonito broth. Simmered soki is very soft, and its meat is soft enough to split from a bone smoothly. This is the dish that customers can satisfy.

Customers can also buy “Koregusu (a seasoning with soaked chili peppers into Awamori)," and it could be a souvenir. Enjoy a relaxing moment at a restaurant in a quiet area.
