Yukata Rentals, Eisa Performance, and a Ferris Wheel; Every Night is a Festival at the Ryukyu Yomatsuri
post : 2018.09.08 00:00
Did you know that there’s a night festival going on every night in Okinawa from August 10th to September 23rd? This special event is called the “Summertime Yomitan Yoakari 2018; Ryukyu Yomatsuri,” and takes place at Murasaki Mura in Yomitan Village. Some of you may already know about the “Wintertime Ryukyu Lantern Festival” at Murasaki Mura, but this year, the popular Ryukyu theme park has come up with a summer/autumn version of this popular event. The lanterns and other displays of lights are created with Ryukyu and Japanese “Wa” tastes and, needless to say, are very photogenic. You can also rent and be fitted into a summer kimono called “yukata,” and enjoy live entertainment such as Okinawa’s Eisa drum dancing and others, as well as games and delicious snacks from the stalls. It’s great to experience the rare “every night is a festival” atmosphere!
My first recommendation is the yukata rental. For 3,500 yen, you can rent the yukata, undergarment kimono, obi sash, and geta footwear, and it even includes the fitting. What a great way to make memories, getting all dressed up in traditional Japanese summer kimono to thoroughly enjoy yourself at the night festival. On the grounds at the Ryukyu Night Festival in Murasaki Mura are numerous spots fantastic photos to post on your SNS.
You can purchase coupons at the ticket counter to save on yukata rentals, and these coupons can be used at the stalls and the “Hoshi-zora Yuenchi, or the ‘starry sky fair’. (Please check the details at the ticket counter.)
At the Hoshi-zora Yuenchi, there will be a mini Ferris wheel set up for the duration of the event (300 yen for a ride). The Ferris wheel isn’t just for kids, so adults can enjoy a fun ride surrounded by twinkling lights, too.
Every night from 19:30, visitors are treated to various types of entertainment, like Okinawa’s famous Eisa drum dancing and other performances. The entertainment takes place at the central stage in the Murasaki Mura grounds, and there’s no extra charge.
The lighting displays are of Japanese “Wa” motifs, as well as unique Okinawan patterns such as the Minsa (with four and five square shapes, meaning “eternal love”). There are so many lovely displays of lights throughout the park grounds, so stroll around and find your favorite spot.
Right next to the yukata rental and fitting area is a photo studio where you can pay for a session with a professional photographer for 3,000 yen (for 9 photos). The yukata rental deposit is also 3,000 yen, so you can opt to use the deposit refund for a photo session to remember the fun night!
