There are several varieties that represent Okinawa’s flora in season at this time of the year, but among them, we can’t leave out the Easter lilies. Ie Island is known to be the big spot to view these beautiful flowers, but there’s a place on the main island of Okinawa, too. That spot is located at the central region of the island, in the Okinawa Comprehensive Athletic Park situated in Hiyane, Okinawa City.
The Park stretches across a large area of 70.4 hectares, and so where in this vast grounds can you view the blooming Easter lilies? Well, that would be at the Lily Garden!
The Lily Garden is located near the South Entrance (by the sea) within the Shizen Kansatsu-no Mori, or the Nature Observation Forest, where the Observation Platform is located. There’s a parking lot nearby (Shizen Kansatsu-no Mori Parking Lot) and admission is also free.
Here’s a close-up shot of the Easter lilies. The pure white of the petals really stand out against the beautiful blue Okinawan sky.
What makes these flowers very special is their lovely scent. The whole garden is embraced by this pleasant smell and a stroll through the gardens is really relaxing.
There are two gazebos within the Garden, so you can sit and enjoy the scene and scent in the shade. As you can see, it wasn’t just people sitting back and enjoying the environment.
Around the end of May is the best time to see them here, so if you miss the Easter lilies at this time of the year on Ie Island which sees its peak during Japan’s Golden Week, I recommend a visit to the Okinawa Comprehensive Athletic Park!
