While enjoying a wonderful vacation, there are times when you eat just a little too much, have just a little too many drinks, or simply just have a little too much fun…Here are some healthy Okinawan beverages for you for just those times. From beverages cherished by the locals for years, to those made with produce that are grown taking full advantage of the warm climate here on Okinawa. You’ll want to make these beverages a part of your daily diet even after you return home from your trip to Okinawa.

Okinawa’s Version of Rice Milk, Loved by the Locals for Over 50 Years

Genmai-Nyu or brown rice milk is a drink that has been enjoyed by the locals since long ago. It looks like a milky coffee drink, but it’s actually made with brown rice, molasses, and water. Brown rice is cooked in a large pot, liquid molasses is added and the color and thickness are adjusted. Genmai-Nyu is rich in dietary fiber, vitamins and mineral, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages, even if you happen to be allergic to milk or soy beans.

The day starts early for the makers of Genmai-Nyu, with preparations starting at 2:00AM every morning. Freshly bottled Genmai is delivered to the households, and shelves are stocked at local convenience stores on Ishigaki Island. Now, you’re probably wondering about its taste. Many people say that it’s like a sweet mochi drink. If you see it in stores, give it a try. You might get hooked like many people do.

Hand-Rolled Guava Tea, an Easy-to-Drink Beverage with a Gentle Flavor

Guava tea is known for its high polyphenol content, which helps to alleviate the absorption of sugars and to control the rise of your blood sugar levels. Along with Ucchin (turmeric) and Kumisukuchin (cat whiskers), Guava tea is one of the top three herbal teas enjoyed in Okinawa. Unfortunately, tea made with guava leaves have a taste that many people aren’t too fond of. This was so until Temomi Guava-Cha Honpo (hand-rolled guava tea shop) in Kadena Town came up with a delightfully easy to drink guava tea that is refreshing and has a sweet aroma.

Young guava leaves are collected along with the stems from trees that are grown without any pesticides nor chemical fertilizers, and the tea leaves are selected one by one, all by hand. After two rounds of washing, the guava leaves are steamed and carefully hand-rolled to soften the fibers, and finally, the bitterness is squeezed out. Then the leaves go through three levels of drying, using a method that requires no heating. The process is now complete for a guava tea with a very clean and refreshing taste. This makes a great souvenir for friends and family who are conscious about their health.

Fresh Juice from the Bright Red Acerola Fruit Nurtured Under the Okinawan Sun

Acerola is a tropical fruit grown in Okinawa, the only place in Japan that this cherry-like fruit can be grown. In one acerola cherry, there’s about the same amount of Vitamin C from five lemons. The acerola fruits grown in Okinawa have a higher level of sweetness in comparison to those grown in Brazil, which is what many acerola products on the market are made with. The acerola grown in the summers in Okinawa are particularly sweet. If you’d like to try this superfruit, head to the Acerola Fresh parlor in Motobu Town that offers fresh, 100% acerola drinks direct from their factory.

The acerola juice offered here are not available anywhere else, and we’re sure that its delicious sweet taste will surprise you. In the summertime, they also offer shaved ice with a sweet and tangy acerola sauce topping. After a day in the hot Okinawan sun, this is a perfect way to provide your body with inner care since acerola has high Vitamin C content as well as polyphenol that has great antioxidant effects.
