Popular Sightseeing Spot in Rainy Season “Yohena Hydrangea Garden”
Speaking of a popular sightseeing spot especially in the rainy season in Okinawa, you cannot forget about “Yohena Ajisai (Hydrangea) Garden” in Izumi, Motobu Town in the north of the main island of Okinawa.
What’s special about Yohena Ajisai Garden?
When you see as many as 300,000 hydrangeas from10,000 bulbs in full bloom all over the hill, you will be genuinely touched by the beauty!
Different from the view of the wabi sabi (the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death) world found in hydrangea gardens in mainland Japan, you can appreciate the typical subtropical landscape of Okinawa, hego (flying spider-monkey tree fern) growing together.
This area was originally used as fields for pineapples and citrus fruits like tankan (Citrus Tankan Hayata). The owner, Mrs. Uto Yohena started growing hydrangeas from cuttings of just a few himeajisai (Hydrangea serrata) over 30 years.
Uto-san is 97 years old now, but she still takes care of her hydrangea gardens with her hands.
As well as appreciating charming flowers, many fans of Yohena Ajisai Garden look forward to seeing the owner, Uto-san every year.
Other than blue himeajisai, you can find a variety kind of hydrangeas.
In addition, not only hydrangeas but different species of flowers have been planted. Candy-colored flowers join the blue world, which makes the color layout just, so beautiful.
When I had an interview with Uto-san, still 70 to 80 percent of the hydrangeas were open. From the end of May to early June, the garden will welcome the full bloom of hydrangeas!
Please enjoy the typical sightseeing in the rainy season in Okinawa.
