Enjoy snorkeling frantically in transparent water.
Listen to wild birds singing in the subtropical forest.
While playing in the river, eat a freshly-caught shrimp.

Play for keeps and experience the nature in a magnanimous climate of Okinawa.
You can do that in “Neko no Waku Waku Nature Class.” (hereinafter collectively called “Neko Waku)

As Okinawa School of Incorporated NPO “National Outfitters Training School,” this facility “Neko Waku” was established in 2000 and has been run by Mr. Yuu Marutani, who is commonly called “Yuu Nii.” (“Nii” means a big brother.)

“Neko Waku” has a vast variety of programs like playing in the river or the sea for a child 2 years old and up with a parent, camping on the remote island only by children, camping for building a secret base.

“I want children to savor a dynamic nature experience that they can hardly have at home or at school.  Stay away from a TV or a picture book, and use all five senses fully to experience of touching and feeling real things,” said Yuu Nii.

Move your hands, use your body, and call on all of your wisdom.

Children having adventures and challenges in the sea and in the mountain that they cannot usually experience have a great deal of curiosity with brightest smile.

When children cutting bamboo to make an arrow and a bow or try making fire, things don’t go as they want without a convenient tool.  That’s what makes it all the more exciting when they accomplish it.

Jumping into the water, fishing colorful fish, …

Being impressed by a wonderful starry sky on the camping night…. all of wonder and excitement they experience for the first time will be powerfully imprinted on their mind.
Nature becomes a field which makes children grow strongly.

In a program which a parent and a child join together, even an adult relives his or her childhood and play hard, which is one of the good parts about “Neko Waku.”

Before they knew it, parents completely lost themselves in a play and enjoyed more than their children!  It happens a lot.  (I am a good example!)

The nature experience seems to be full of fun, but Yuu Nii said “Actually sometimes we have a hard time, but it is also important.”
For example, we know the weather is nothing we can control in the nature.
Unfortunately we sometimes rainy days, but jus complaining cannot be helped.
I hope they will understand the harsh rigor of nature as well as learn to reboot their mind under such a circumstance to find something they can enjoy.

Patience and a good spirit with which they can enjoy under any environment will be the energy to overcome the life challenges they might be facing when they go into the workforce.

It is a long way to go, but Yuu Nii hopes that experiences they have here will be a great help some day.  Thinking about their future, Yuu Nii gives loving attention to children.

“Neko Waku” programs are supported mainly by Yuu Nii and by volunteer university students who love nature and children.
They take care of children and play together in each program.  Getting to know these big brothers and big sisters is also one of the pleasures.

Laugh, cry, and sometimes quarrel with friends….
Forget time and tiredness to enjoy great outdoors like crazy….
These memories will never fade away even when you grow up.

You can experience fun things and tough things, and something unexpected can happen, which is why, playing in the nature is interesting and exciting.
Each of events during the program is a treasure to children.
These rainbow-colored memories must be engraved in their heart.
