In the workshop of a folk house in Nakijin Village, colorful works of pottery born.
With various colors and themes of birds and flowers, just looking at the pottery will make your heart flutter.
Making the pottery is a team of sisters from Osaka called “Futagodo” (lit. Twin Hall).
As the name states, the two of them are identical twins. Aya is a potter and is in charge of forming the body of the pottery and coloring it, and Iku is an artist who puts the drawings and pictures on pottery. The illustrations and use of color pops out at you and gives off a vibrant feel when placed on the dining table. In addition to coffee cups, they also make other types of earthenware such as buttons, vases, milk pitchers and bowls.
Aya and Iku are twins from Osaka. Aya started doing pottery 14 years ago and did an apprenticeship and other experiences in pottery in the Kansai region. About 5 years ago, Aya moved to Okinawa with her family and a year later Iku moved there after her. The themes of birds and flowers are from the Okinawan nature that can be seen from their own gardens.
If you look at the pottery closely, all of them are different. This is because when the pottery is being formed, tools like rulers are not used.
“I want to place importance on the clay I am holding. I can feel this as I form the clay in my hands. The drawings are made to match the piece, so each drawing is different.
Their works can be bought at their own home studio “Kobo Futagodo”, at “Yasou Cafe Yamacha” in Okinawa City, the interior store “LeeAmm” in Ginowan and the inn “Tinto Tinto” in Nakajin Village and other shops and at crafts fairs. Due to the fact that they are fragile, they cannot be shipped to Honshu. So, when you come to Okinawa, find a work that you like and take it home with you carefully.
