Bar Costilla is located in a quiet residential area near the downtown of Ishigaki Island.
Sliding the door to enter, you can find an atmospheric adult space where soothing music is played in the bar reformed from a 50 year-old traditional house.
Spanish bar Costilla was moved here from Kanda, Tokyo in 2012.
Mr. Katsuya Sakurajima runs the bar all by himself. When he visited Ishigaki Island for the first time, he was so impressed by the delicious taste of the island vegetables that he decided to move here. During his first trip, he even finished the contract of using the current site.
Using plenty of local ingredients including vegetables, he provides snacks, meat dishes, seafood dishes, rice dishes including paella. Couse meals are also available, starting from 1,000 yen course, so you can casually enjoy eating and drinking at this bar.
Assorted tapas of the day were pickled island vegetables including papaya, olives, salami of Iberian pork from Spain
A large collection of wine is all special from Spain. Other than wine, the bar offers liqueur from Spain as well as a variety of rum.
He arranged dishes in Spanish style, for example, stew Ishigaki beef in demiglace sauce and simmered soft-bone souki (pork spare rib) in tomato sauce.
Sangria is soaked with the island fruits such as mango, pineapple, passion fruits.
After squeezing lemon over paella full of seafood and put some in your mouth, umami (savory flavor) from dashi (stock) spread in your mouth. Sakurajima-san caught asari (Japanese littleneck) from the sea.
“As I was impressed when I tasted food on the island for the first time, I would like my customers to enjoy the food unique to this land,” he said.
“Costilla” means a rib in Spanish word, and “souki” in Okinawan language. When he visited Spain, the sound of the word he found on the menu at a restaurant stood out in his memory. He named his shop “Costilla.”
Sakurajima-san’s hobby is DJ. Together with friends on the island, he holds events regularly. “Many interesting people live on Ishigaki Island, a lot of fun things are produced by many wonderful connection with those people,” he said.
Sakurai-san loves life on the island where he can do what he likes and the job he likes at his own pace.
Some customers have been here once before come back to dine at his bar. Sometimes Sakurai-san drinks with the customers at late hours.
It is a small bar with slow, relaxing music played. You can feel at home completely as you enjoy delicious cuisine and alcohol.
