In Motobu Town, where Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is located, there is a factory parlor called “Acerola Fresh,” which offers you delicious, cold and fresh sorbet and freshly-squeezed juice. Acerola cherry is a super fruit as one acerola holds about 50x the amount of vitamin C found in lemons. The fruit of the southern land grown only in Okinawa in Japan is cultivated with the sunlight streaming down on it in Okinawa.
To get to the parlor, with a red banner flag saying “Acerola (アセローラ)” as a benchmark, you will come into the community, away from Highway 84. Very red juice and sorbet made from fresh, red acerolas are perfect for an atmosphere of the southern land. It is very cold, and a rich but refreshing sweet-and-sour taste brings you a sense of coolness to your hot throat. During on season in summer, they sell shaved ice and sundae.
An ingredient, 100 % of acerola, of course, came from Motobu Town, Okinawa. During its season from May to November, freshly-harvested acerola are carried in by hands of the neighboring farmers. Acerolas differ in varieties and tastes according to production areas. The ingredients of canned juice is acerola from Brazil, and acerolas in Okinawa characteristically have a higher sugar content than that of Brazilian acerolas. The fruits are especially sweet in the mid summer season from July to August.
The beauty benefits of vitamin C is well known, but a polyphenol extract, which can be seen in the red color of acerolas, has antioxidant effect. It is perfect for inner care after sunburn and for relieving hangover symptom. After playing too much at the beach or after drinking Orion Beer and awamori (Okinawan liquor), how about savoring refreshingly cold, freshly-squeezed acerola juice?
