Sugar cane is famous ingredients for brown sugar. There are many sugar cane fields in Okinawa, so you can easily find them when driving around the island.

Uji-zome uses sugar cane as dyeing color. "Uji" means sugar cane in Okinawan dialect.

In dyeing process, sugar cane leaves are boiled. Fresh green color and sunny yellow comes out which reminds us of sugarcane fields under the sun.

Depending on the season when sugarcanes are harvested, or the length of time materials were immersed in the dyeing liquid, it changes color so you can enjoy various green colors that sugar canes naturally have.

In summer, sugar cane leaves are bright green so it gives more yellow color. In winter, it becomes more darken color.

Uji-zome has two types of weaving method. One is called "Yashirami weaving" which uses two colors of yarn unique to Ryukyu weaving and weave these yarns alternately. This pattern creates a gradient between two colors which is so beautiful. The other one is called "Gu-shi weaving". It creates 3-dimentional patterns using a bamboo skewer.

To promote Uji-zome products, a place that sells Uji-zome materials and where you can see the dyeing process was established and it is located in Tomigusuku City, southern part of Okinawa, right next to Roadside Station Toyosaki JA.

There are many products such as Kariyushi wear, stole, cloth, and shoes. It is also good as souvenir and gift. Many products here have pattern that is inspired by sugar cane.

You can see how these products are made and if you are lucky, you may be able to see the dyeing process or winding yarns.

Seeing the whole process from dyeing to weaving, you even become more attached to uji-zome products.

You can also experience dyeing and weaving here! In dyeing, choose a design and colors you like and it takes only 15 minutes to make one. In weaving, you will make a coaster or bookmarker in 20 minutes. There are not so many places where you can experience weaving.

Staffs will teach you what to do at each step, so it will not be that difficult ! There are designs of popular cartoon characters so children can enjoy too!
