Kick Back and Relax at HAMMOCK CAFÉ LA ISLA on Senaga Island

They say the comfortable swinging of a hammock has relaxing effects and mitigates stress. That’s why hammocks are “healing items” for the busy, modern people. It would be nice to have a hammock for household, but that would require space and that can be a challenge for many of us.

This is why I want to recommend HAMMOCK CAFÉ LA ISLA, located on a small island called Senaga Island just 15 minutes away by car from Naha Airport. The seats in this café, whether indoors or outdoors, are all hammocks! The owner set out to open the shops with the hopes of “offering a place where people can relax and spend a comfortable time in a way that’s a little bit different from everyday life.”

Each one of the hammocks at the café are handmade by Mayans who live in Mexico, and these hammocks are very sturdy and fits your body just right! The sitting-type of hammock can support 150kg, and the regular hammocks where you can lie down can support up to 300kg!

The terrace seats offer a wonderful ocean view, and the combination of the gentle ocean breeze and the comfortable swinging of the hammocks are so inviting that some people end up taking a little nap. On one occasion, a customer ended up sleeping for three hours! The staff says, “There’s usually no time limit, so please take your time and relax.” (During busy times, they kindly ask for understanding in the 1.5 hour time limit.)

They offer delicious foods that are prepared so that they’re easy to eat while hanging out on the hammocks, too. Like their Tortilla Rolls, which has meat and cheese wrapped in a tortilla. You can choose from chicken, curry chicken, or beef. The staff recommended the chicken, and so I thought I’d give it a try.

I took one bite of the Tortilla Roll, and the spices imported from Mexico spread from my palate and throughout my senses, and for a second, I felt like I was in an exotic, foreign country. The Tortilla Roll was filled with chunks of chicken inside, so it was more filling than I had expected. It was delicious and the volume was enough to satisfy any appetite.

Some of their most popular beverages include local Okinawan craft beer, mojito with fresh herbs, non-alcoholic cocktails, and the Dragon Mango Flamingo, a fresh dragon fruit juice.

It’s amazing how being wrapped up in a hammock releases the tension throughout your body, and your body and mind instantly goes into relax mode. If you’re feeling like you need a little break, or you’ve been working too much lately and you need to de-tense your body, “swing” by and enjoy your time gently rocking on a hammock! If you happen to love the hammocks there, they’re also available for purchase, too!
