A Retro-Style Crepe Shop, O’Crepe, in the Heart of a Market Town

The triangular area surrounded by Kokusai Street, Ukishima Street, and Sakurazaka Naka Dori is one of the best places in the city to take a stroll. In this very unique neighborhood where the scents and atmosphere of everyday life drift thickly in the air from the public market area, is Sweets Café O’Crepe which opened its doors about six years ago.

When you ascend the narrow steps and open the purple wooden door to the cafe, you’ll find yourself in a space that looks like it could be a movie set. The interior is 100% Western-style, with dried flowers and mid-century sofas, but this retro, foreign style surprisingly matches the neighborhood that has a very distinct local atmosphere. Despite the contrast, it somehow blends right in. The area and the shop are both very unique, blending together the ordinary and extraordinary.

Crepes have been popular among people in Japan for a long time, especially with women, and this shop offers a wonderfully romantic setting to enjoy the delicious treats. They offer authentic crepes prepared with 100% rice flour. You can choose from eight varieties which include sweet choices and savory meals. Tsukasa Higa, the owner-patissier of O’Crepe is very particular about his ingredients besides the rice flour, choosing millet powder for sweetness, soy milk for moisture, and not butter but flavorful Taihaku sesame oil, all blended together to create a taste that you can only enjoy here.

You simply cannot go wrong with just the fluffy and chewy crepes, but when accompanied by apple slices that are carefully sautéed, and topped with their homemade caramel sauce, these crepes are just heavenly. Higa-san says, “The rice flour really goes well with the saltiness,” and recommends the Agu Bacon and Pumpkin Salad crepe, as well. I couldn’t wait to try them.

Tsukasa Higa, the Owner-Patissier of O’ Crepe. He explained that he added the “O” in the shop’s name with hopes that fate and good fortune will come to a full circle.

As the shop is situated at a convenient location from Kokusai Street and sees a lot of customers who are visiting Okinawa, they offer various beverages that are made with the local ingredients. For example, they have acerola juice, chai and herbal tea from acerola, spices, and herbs grown in the northern Yanbaru region of Okinawa Island.

Hot beverages with local ingredients like Hot Hibiscus (420 yen) and Yanbaru Chai Tea (500 yen) are served in tea cups created by the popular pottery artist, Mika Higashionna.

From the small park in front of the shop, you can hear children playing and enjoying their after-school hours. Their laughter and calls are cheerful and comfortable to the ear. I hope you’ll drop by the café and immerse yourself in a wonderful world where you will forget about the passing of time and really enjoy your Okinawa Time.
