Taken from the Latin word for the first star of the night, “Spica”, and pure white, “Lily”, the shop Spicalily specializes in accessories. The beautiful pieces displayed in the shop are made with the hopes of Shuko Arashiro, the accessory designer, that “the women who wear these will shine brightly like the first star.”
All the accessories are made carefully by hand, each with gemstones, shells, and coral. Arashiro-san says, “The moment you put on a piece of accessory, your motivation rises and you feel more feminine. I find joy when I see that moment when women shine.”
“When I was a child, I enjoyed making accessories. In elementary school, I made accessories with beads and my friends would buy them from me,” she says with a giggle.
Arashiro-san is from Osaka, but has roots in Ishigaki Island. She wanted to pursue a path in entertainment, and so she decided to go to America to start on her journey. Before her departure to the States, she thought, “I need to acquire skills in something that I can be proud of and to show people,” and so she decided to go to Ishigaki Island instead, at the age of 19. As she learned to play the Sanshin, she began working at an accessory shop in the island, at her very first part-time job. Through her first job, she learned the ropes in customer service, telephone handling, and accessory making, and before long, her dream of going into the entertainment world shifted, and she wanted to be an accessory designer.
After apprenticing for three years, she moved to Okinawa Island, where she worked hard, struggling to establish a clientele. She consigned her works to local resort hotels and cafes, and experienced selling her pieces at a wagon-style booth, and later, went to see countless vacant tenancies. Finally, at the age of 31, she opened her very own shop, Spicalily. Looking back, Arashiro-san says, “It really was a long path.”
Nowadays, she makes necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other pieces that express the “colors of Okinawa”, and she also makes made-to-order accessories.
Customers who visit the shop can find a piece that they like, and ask Arashiro-san, “I like this style but I want a different stone”, or any other requests. In about 30 minutes, a one-of-a-kind accessory, made just the way you want, is complete!
Chalcedony, the magenta-colored stone, is reminiscent of bougainvillea, and they say chalcedony stones have powers to make your wishes come true. Arashiro-san says she receives numerous reports from happy customers who purchased her accessories with chalcedony stones, about their wonderful experiences.
Birthstones, symbolism of various stones, favorite colors, shapes…whatever you wish, ask Arashiro-san to create something just for you.
