Try It Once and You’ll Be Hooked! [Pizzeria ONDA] is the Only Establishment on Okinawa That Offers Traditional Napoli Pizza (Kumoji, Naha City)
Introducing Pizzeria ONDA, the one and only place in Okinawa where you can enjoy authentic Napoli pizza. They first opened in 2012 in Minatogawa, Urasoe City, in the popular area with stylish shops set up in former military housings, but relocated to Kumoji, Naha City in 2015. Situated just at the back of Kokusai Street, the shop is a convenient place to go for not just tourists, but also for local office workers and anyone trying to decide where to go for lunch.
The establishment underwent stringent inspection conducted by the Associazione Verace Pizza Naoletana, an association that pursues “authentic” Napoli pizza, and was recognized as the 504th establishment in the world where people can enjoy the real, traditional Napoli pizza or Pizza Napaoletana which has been cherished for over 300 years in Naples, Italy. As the only establishment in Okinawa that’s recognized as such, the restaurant’s regular customers include diplomats and many customers from Europe and North America, as well as from Italy, home of pizza. It continues to satisfy the palates of customers from all over the world.
The first recommendation on the list is their “hidden” menu that’s only available by reservation, the Assorted Appetizer (available from party of two from ¥1,200 to ¥1,400 plus tax, per person). The plate offers an amazing ten varieties of appetizers using Italian ham and fresh organic vegetables procured from local contracted farmers. The photo shown above has prosciutto from Parma, mortadella (Italian cold cut), and salami. It also has deep-fried pizza dough that has Aosa or sea lettuce mixed in, and marinated local Okinawan Shima Ninjin carrots and blood oranges from Sicilia. In addition, you’ll find a marinate with pumpkin and mint which were grown by a farmer in Haneji, Nago City, cauliflower vinaigrette, and rucola leaves. Also on the plate are smoked marlin tuna carpaccio caught in the Okinawan waters, and crostini bread with white liver paste from young Yanbaru chicken. The items on the plate may partially change according to season, but the variety is certainly more than what most establishments offer.
Their most popular menu item is their Margherita Pizza (¥1,300+tax). The pizza crust, said to be the most important part of the pizza, is made with the famous flour from Caputo, a company that boasts the largest market share in Naples. The salt and yeast used for the crust are also produced in Campagna, Italy. The mozzarella cheese is also from Campagna, and given high-quality marks in Naples. The tomato sauce is incredible, too, and the pizza is made all according to the traditional methods of the authentic Napoli Pizza.
Next up is their second popular item, the Quattro Formaggi (¥1,800+tax) and Rich Honey (¥250+tax). This delicious creation has rich tastes of blue cheese like Gorgonzola, as well as plenty of other cheese variations. You can order the additional Rich Honey to round off the taste and to enhance the deep flavors.
This is Pizzeria ONDA’s proud firewood oven that they specially ordered from Italy (from the famous Stefano Ferrara Forni company) and transported all the way to Okinawa on a journey that took a month. Everything is done according to the traditional methods, even down to the firewood used for the oven.
Pictured above is Manabu Suzuki, the owner of Pizzeria ONDA. He acquired his knowledge of traditional Napoli pizza at Italian restaurants in Tokyo, and also studied in Italy before opening his restaurant in Okinawa. He’s not only known for his wonderfully delicious pizzas, but also for his skills in serving Orion Beer from the tap, and many beer bar owners and workers, and professional chefs come to enjoy his fares.
Pizzeria ONDA offers exquisite pizzas but not only that, they’re available at great deals during their lunch hours, where you can enjoy their pizza with salad and a beverage. Another great piece of information is that they also offer their menu items for takeout. For dinner, I also recommend their course menu (by reservations only) which includes salad with organic vegetables, pizza, their daily pasta, main dish, and dessert for ¥5,000 per person. The main dish can include Japanese Kuroge Wagyu Beef, like Motobu Beef, and other mouthwatering ingredients. Enjoy a splendid lineup of delicious Italian dishes, accompanied by wine specially selected by the owner, or some Orion Beer!
