A Great Spot on the Hills in the Northern Region of Okinawa Island! The Spectacular View of Cape Hedo from the “Yanbaru Kuina Observatory”

The large observatory called Yanbaru Kuina (Okinawan rail) Tenbodai stands on a hill about five minutes away by car from Cape Hedo at the northern tip of Okinawa Island. To get there, go past the sign that marks the remains of Uzahama, and down the hill, and then go uphill again along the curvy road.

Yanbaru Kuina or Okinawan rail is a native species of flightless birds that inhabit the forests of Yanbaru or the northern region of Okinawa Island, and is designated as a natural monument. It has distinctive red beaks and feet, and these features are recreated on this observatory.

When we first got there, we were shocked at how big it was! It measures 11 meters in height and the photo above may give you some idea of its size. It’s quite enormous!!

Right next to it is a deck where you can observe the scenery around you. Before your eyes is the breathtaking sight of the wide-open sky and sea. This hidden scenic spot offers a great view, and on clear days, you can see as far as Yoron Island of Kagoshima Prefecture.

The Yanbaru Kuina structure itself is the observatory so you can climb the stairs inside to take you up to the observation space. You can enjoy the view from a higher elevation.

You can peek out from the opening of the Yanbaru Kuina’s chest, or look out from under its wings. Down below, you’ll see a fantastic view of the white sandy beach, another best-kept secret of the area. And visible from all of the lookout points is Cape Hedo, with its unique appearance like that of a dragon head.

Seeing Cape Hedo from a distance gives a stronger feeling that you’re truly at the tip of the island.

The giant observation point offers a fantastic view of the great open sea, as well as Cape Hedo and the cliffs of Kayauchi Banta. It’s a highly recommended viewing spot in the northern region of Okinawa Island.
