The woodcrafter who can revive scrap wood
post : 2013.08.31 16:00
We found a beautiful bench.
It is made of scrap wood, and the holes from nails and the previous shapes of the wood have been left in its form.
This work, made of pieces of wood not uniform in color and shape, is very creative, and every part seems to tell its own story.
The creator of the bench is Katsuya Shimabukuro.
He runs a woodworking shop called "b12" in Urasoe City, Okinawa Prefecture.
He goes to the demolition sites of houses and schools and collects scrap wood.
Shimabukuro says: "Scrap wood was once something that admirably supported someone's life. Changing form, it becomes able to support someone else again." When there is an order, he creates works also using wood from the prefecture other than scrap wood.
He meticulously plans while doing his calculations in order not to waste wood, and while creating works using scrap wood, he makes efforts not to produce scrap wood himself.
Even scraps become cute sundries through ideas and imagination.
A small cut end has become this pretty lion-shaped ornament.
This wooden plate is Shimabukuro's first work. The stout wooden bag next to it has been purchased by a famous actor.
The material and grain of the wood is once-in-a-lifetime. Every one has its own character, and taking one into your hands makes you grow fond of it.
In this modern day so overflowing with things, Shimabukuro changes the parting of people and objects into new encounters.
When you come to Okinawa, how about taking a look at the workshop?
