Yaese in southern Okinawa. There is a folk house with white tiled roof and an upright shisa is enshrined. You can hear the clicking and clacking of a loom. It is a comfortable old fashioned sound on the ears.
At the weaving studio Shiyon, Junko Kikumura Tomoko Nagaike, Emiko Yamashiro and Shoko Makiyama practice traditional Okinawan weaving while designing products for now and using various materials for dyes as they the thoughtfully dye threads and hand weave.
There is a workshop and a selling space so you can see them working up close while choosing a product.
This is a small clasp purse. The vibrant color will lift your spirits and make shopping more fun.
This business card holder is also colorful. The pink is hana ori (flower weaving) and the aquamarine one is made with gushihanaori.
The rosary bag made from silk and the half with cloth slash made with roton weaving. Roton weaving is one type the Shuri weaving where the vertical tread are raised.
The four of them make items as they please but all the items by Shiyon are heartwarming and a natural texture.
“Made to give the feeling happiness to and ease of use.”
With these thoughts they make Okinawan textiles everyday.
Come to the studio, meet the makers and pick something up. With these encounters, it should make your day a little bit brighter than normal.
