Japan's Southernmost Folk House Cafe where You can Enjoy Vegetarian Meals
post : 2014.11.22 16:00
South of the hamlet on Hateruma Island, once you get through the path of bougainvillea there is an unassuming folk house.
It is Japan’s southernmost cafe “Kukuru Cafe”, which is a relaxing comfortable cafe that is like going to your grandmother’s house to play.
The open interior with no dividers and doors lets a comfortable breeze through. With the hammock and three cats that live in the cafe, the slow going island time opens up for you.
The dishes are vegetarian using fresh vegetables, like the Okinawan tofu chocolate cake and qeema curry, are made without using meat or dairy products but you can’t tell by the taste.
There are a lot of special Okinawa items on the menu like jasmine soymilk chai and brown cane sugar soy milk latte. In the veggie taco rice instead of ground meat they use Okinawan tofu and instead of cheese they use a sticky millet sauce that was made in Hateruma.
The sweet smell of the hibiscus tea and your tiredness for walking and bathing in the sunlight is slowly alleviated.
“I make dishes because I thought I wanted to make delicious healthy food with thing I could see around the island.”
In March the island itself has a relaxed and is summer like feel, you can talk to other customers and owner and I recommend it.
If you come to Hateruma to forget the hustle-bustle of the city, take a break and feel the southernmost breeze at an folk house like the ones long ago.
