Closed Elementary and Middle School Gets Huge Crowd Through Okinawan Crafts! “Art in Ikeijima for Living –Okinawa Artist Market–”

Ikeijima has been gaining interest for the past few years as an island of art for using a closed down elementary and junior high school to “energize the island!” and hold contemporary art, picture book artist and craft exhibitions and more. The “Art in Ikeijima for Living –Okinawa Artist Market–”, which was held last year in February to great popularity, began its second this past March.

kainowa jewelry is made from beautifully polished Okinawan turban shells that tightly concentrate the ocean energy of Hamahigashima.

Karansha flutter lightly in the wind with the fragrance of the Ryukyu-Ai plant.

Tobo Tsuchibito, they have a solid presence even in their rusticness

This helmet and carp streamer by Bingata Kojo Fujino make you instinctively want to decorate your walls with it on Children’s Day.

Ryukyu Glass looks as if it was cut right from the crystal clear water of the ocean shore.

The works of the artists active in the prefecture, and of course of the artists of Uruma, were overflowingly lined up.

The works selected were themed “art blended into living” and could be bought there. The local people of Ikeijima enjoyed their fill of leisurely island time at the welcoming “Granny Café” while doing “yuntaku” (chitchat). Lots of craft making workshops were held during the event, so during spring break couples and families were “seeing”, “touching”, “making” and “buying” the traditional crafts of Okinawa. You could definitely find your own “prized possession” at Ichihanari (nickname for Ikeijima).
