Pork Tamago Onigiri Main Shop, katsu kitchen

Near the Makishi Daiichi Public Market, “Pork Tamago Onigiri Main Shop katsu kitchen” was opened.

This is a specialty shop of the Pork Tamago Onigiri, which is one of ‘Okinawan soul foods’.
It was just opened on November 9, 2014, but already has repeated local customers and has become a popular shop.

The Pork Tamago Onigiri is a rice ball containing fragrantly-stir-fried SPAM meat and thinly-fried egg.
In Okinawa, the Pork Tamago Onigiri have been mainly sold at Obento (lunch box) shops, convenience stores, etc.; however, there has been no special shops of the Pork Tamago Onigiri.

“I would like to give more spotlight on the Pork Tamago Onigiri!”
Mr. Katsuaki Kiyokawa, the owner of the Pork Tamago Onigiri Main Shop, started this shop.

“When I went  to an obento shop, a variety of obento lunch boxes are sold, with simply placed Pork Tamago Onigiri that I love on the corner.  I wanted the Pork Tamago Onigiri to come to the center stage,” said Katsuaki-san.

The shop has a variety of unique menu items for the Pork Tamago Onigiri, using orthodox ingredients such as homemade aburamiso (pork miso paste), takana (Japanese mustard green), konbu (kelp) no tsukudani* as well as freshly deep-fried shrimp, pork ginger, etc.

And on top of that, staff at the shop start preparing food by hand one by one after a customer makes an order, so customers can enjoy achikookoo (freshly-prepared) rice balls.

*tsukudani:  small seafood, meat or seaweed that has been simmered in soy sauce and mirin.

I would like to highly recommend “Age Pork Tamago Onigiri.”  Rice, cheese, SPAM meat, thinly-fried egg, and fresh cabbage are sandwiched by battered and deeply-fried nori (laver).
The rice is seasoned with wasabi (grated horseradish) soy sauce while crispy nori is with tonkatsu (pork cutlet) sauce.

They let me try one, and when I had one bite, the cheese melted in my mouth!
Crisp cabbage gave it a kick, and it was really delicious.
A big volume of the food made me full!

When you go driving far from Naha, I would highly recommend to bring a 1,000 yen pack, which includes four different Pork Tamago Onigiri and two drinks.  The four Pork Tamago Onigiri are Deep-fried shrimp with tartar sauce, Tuna seasoned with mayonnaise and boiled egg, pork ginger and thinly-fried egg, and one of regular ingredients (Konbu, Takana, Aburamiso, or salmon).
The pack would be perfect for you to eat in a car while moving toward your destination, or eat at a park for the break from driving.

Ojii (elderly men) and obaa (elderly ladies) as well as nini (young men) and nene (young ladies) also buy here.
Please try delicious Pork Tamago Onigiri!
