Recommended sightseeing in Okinawa during rainy season “Bios on the Hill Night Tour”
The rainy season set in Okinawa a little earlier than mainland Japan. The recommended sightseeing especially for this season is a firefly watching tour!
There are several spots for firefly watching in Okinawa, but each of them seems hard for general tourists to join. Here, I have a recommendation for you! It is a night tour at “Bios on the Hill” in Uruma City in the central part of Okinawa. As the guided tour can offer you admiration of nature on the safe premise, beginners and visitors with small children can join at ease.
The site area of “Bios on the Hill” is 75,000 tsubo (about 247933㎡), which is about 7.5 times the size of Tokyo Dome. There are a variety of plants and animals special to Okinawa such as water buffalos, black pigs, and goats. The Bios on the Hill is a sightseeing facility rich in nature, and provides night tours only on weekends during this season after regular daytime opening hours.
The night tours for 2015 are held on Saturdays and Sundays from Saturday, May 16 to Sunday, June 28 for visitors to enjoy firefly watching, etc.! You can ride on a boat night cruise, and enjoy admiration of firefly watching while strolling around the park with a guide.
In order to join the Bios on the Hill Night Tour, please make a reservation by phone in advance and come to the entrance to the park at 18:30 on your reservation date. After all the visitors during the daytime opening hours leave the park, participants for a night tour can enter the park. You can enjoy walking around the park freely until the tour starts at 19:00. As it is quiet and daytime heat is cooled down, you will feel so comfortable.
First, you will have a mini-lesson on fireflies. All the participants are provided with free guidebooks. As you can get bits of knowledge on fireflies before the tour, it will surely be helpful to your appreciation of the insects!
When you are ready, a night jungle tour by lake viewing boat starts on a lake called “Dai Ryu Ike (literally translated as Giant Dragon Pond)” The regular boat cruise is 25 minutes long, but a night tour can provide you another 20 minutes, so you can enjoy the ride totally 45 minutes!
You can savor the fantastical trajectory of fireflies flying about from the lake surface.
After getting out of the sightseeing boat, you can enjoy walking around the park with a guide. You can find not only imago of fireflies flying in the air but also larvae of fireflies giving out light on the ground. In a place where the largest crowd of fireflies can be found, you will be impressed by a fantastic landscape which makes you feel as if you were above the Milky Way.
In addition to fireflies, sometimes “Oriioo koumori (Pteropus dasymallus inopinatus)” and “Ryukyu kajika gaeru (Ryukyu kajika frog)” songs welcome you. You can fully savor “the world of nature in the night of Okinawa,” which you cannot usually experience!
