I found a hidden auberge in “undeveloped region” of Higashi Village! “Pension & Café Terrace Tachigaa”
Higashi Village is in the northern part of mainland Okinawa. While the “main road” Highway 58 stretches out from the north to the south along the western coast, the eastern coast which is called “the back side” had few outstanding facilities for tourism, commerce, dining, accommodation, etc. It is not too much to say that the area is the last “uncultivated land” of mainland Okinawa.
In such an unfamiliar village to many tourists, Higashi Village, I found an authentic and real “hidden house.” As its name suggests, “Pension & Café Terrace Tachigaa” is an auberge which has a café on the first floor and an accommodation space on the second floor. A simple wooden building with no superfluous decoration is naturally blended into rich natural surroundings. It looks like a non-descript structure, but actually many surprising facts are hidden here.
The most surprising thing about the Tachigaa is its high quality. Especially when you step foot into the accommodation space on the second floor, you will be impressed by the interior, furniture, etc. and might say “This high level in this isolated area?” before you knew it. The guestroom with a luxury atmosphere is about 93㎡, and has a
What surprises you is a café on the first floor with an open terrace which the owner is proud of, and tables and chairs on the terrace are all made by the owner!! I sincerely take my hat off to his modern sense and high technique. But unfortunately, most of the furniture was sold out by discerning clients, so we cannot see them anymore. And on top of that, the reclamation of the site of about 2,800 tsubo (about 9.256m²) and the construction of the workshop had been gradually created by almost himself over nearly 30 years.
As the accommodation is only for one couple per day, you can keep this vast land literally all to yourself after 7PM when the café is closed. Also there are some more interesting things on the site I want to introduce to you, which are handmade canoes, two not-so-friendly dogs (LOL), and a popular terrace in the air built on the bluff. Looking over the Pacific Ocean from the higher ground of about 65m above sea level, you can enjoy a relaxing lunch. For your information, accommodation guests can rent BBQ set (2,500 yen (tax included) per person for rental BBQ equipment and ingredients).
The most amazing part is that the Tachigaa has natural stream on the site, and what is more, it has two waterfalls! After walking on handmade staircases and walk paths for about 120m, you will hear the cool sound of the stream… In the very calm water, you can see fish swimming (except after the heavy rain, etc.). When the weather is nice, you can enjoy playing along the stream. If you walk further on along the stream, you will reach the seaside. I don’t need to tell you this, but it is almost your own private space.
The Tachigaa is full of surprises from manmade stuff to natural locations. The father of the owner, Ogimi-san is from Higashi Village. Ogimi-san used to live in Urasoe City, the neighboring city of Naha City, but as he spent the weekends in this place surround by the rich nature, he got fascinated by the loveliness and eventually started living here. He wanted as many people as possible to know the charm, so he spent more than a quarter of a century, more than half of his life, and finally opened the pension & café in 2011.
By the way, the name of “Tachigaa” came from the name of two waterfalls, “Tachigaa.” There are two suggestions. One suggestion is that Okinawa did not have a word “taki (meaning “waterfall”)” in the old times, and they called “Tachigaa” for “tatsu kawa (meaning “standing river”). The other is that “Tachi” means “two,” so they called “Tachigaa” for two waterfalls: “First Fall” and “Second Fall.”
Ogimi-san never stops loving Yanbaru, and has never been lazy to provide tangible service as well as intangible service. You can join a tour around a dark green nature (about 3 hours / 1,500 yen per person, tax included) if there is a vacancy. A fishing tour in the nearby sea is also available. (For details, please contact them.) Additionally, as a special service for accommodation guests, rental canoe (different canoes from ones shown in the above photo) service (3,000 yen, tax included for 2 days, 1 night) and a pineapple harvesting experience from July to September (1,500 yen, tax included for 1 group, with two pineapples)
By the way, you might be wondering what the log house by the fall is for. Ogimi-san said with enthusiasm, “He has a plan to renovate it to open it as a guest house.”
With full of charms both in tangible goods and intangible service, the Tachigaa is, so to speak, an Ogimi-san’s grand lifework. The further I listened to him, the more thought and passion of him touched me deeply. His feasible dreams are still under development, and I cannot wait to see how his dreams will evolve into a giant.
