"Battleground Area" for Okinawan Tempura Competition!? The Locals Regularly Visit to “Kadoya” in Tamagusuku, Nanjo City

The area around Oujima Island in Tamagusuku, Nanjo City is famous as a mecca of “drive for tempura,” which is lined with several tempura shops with customers forming a long line outside. Uchinanchu (Okinawan people), who are not used to waiting in a long line (!?), don’t take the trouble to wait in a line and have their favorite shop where they can buy freshly, deep-fried tempura at any time.(LOL) I was also recommended this shop by an acquaintance who lives in Oujima Island. The shop is “Kadoya,” which is located around the corner along Highway 331 leading to Hyakuna Elementary School from Oujima Island.
Freshly deep-fried tempura are displayed in the showcase one after another. The best selling items are plump squid tempura, plain-flavored fish tempura and sweet vegetable tempura. Recently juicy chicken tenderloin tempura are secretly popular. The price is also reasonable, 60 yen per each. There are other kinds of tempura of sweet potato, island tofu.
The daughter of the first owner now runs the shop. She took over the business which her mother started more than 40 years ago.
Fritter-like Okinawan tempura, which is fluffy and thick, is a major regular food for Okinawan people when they are “yaasanooshii (Okinawan word meaning “being hungry”)”! It can be a replacement of “ochazuke (a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice)” which we eat quickly when we are hungry.
Of course you can take it out, and you can eat it in the shop as well in “Kadoya,” which is always full of laughter of regular customers. They offer you a cup of tea, so you might stay longer even though you just stop by there when driving to your destination.
Oh! I have to tell you this! It is common sense that you eat Okinawan tempura with sauce. It is good enough to eat it without sauce, but please try once!
Tempura shops in Okinawa offer you a wide variety of characteristic kinds of tempura including deep-fried Vienna sausage, what they call “vegetable tempura,” which is actually “kakiage*-style” and tempura of common beans and fish sausage shown in the above picture.
* kakiage: a type of tempura made with mixed vegetable strips, such as onion, carrot, and burdock, and sometimes including shrimp or squid, which are deep fried as small round fritters.
It is a favorite destination for the local dating couple from young to old to bring freshly deep-fried tempura to the nearby beach and enjoy eating them while viewing the ocean. But most of the cases they cannot wait and start eating in the car before arriving the beach. (LOL)
