October 10th is Tuna Day
Today is October 10th which is tuna day. 80% of the tuna in Okinawa is fished from near by waters and I went to Tomari Iyumachi!
It is the largest fish market in Okinawa, which is third amount of fresh tuna caught per prefecture. Okinawa tuna are close the fish market and because they can be preserved with out freeze their freshness is exceptionally!
Even the city fish of Naha is tuna.
I went to see the auctioning that takes place from 5 in the morning.. The liveliness of the cheerful voice all over the place raises the spirit! It makes me cheerful.
There is a massive line of freshly caught tuna!!!! Even though were effects from a typhoon on that day 25 tons of tuna caught (that is still a lot), on plentiful days they can catch almost 100 tons of tuna.
That is surprising that they caught that much everyday and on that day all the tuna got priced in auction. Everyday! About 80% of the tuna is consumed in Okinawa and the circumstances that the people of Okinawa get to eat fresh tuna is under luxurious circumstances.
The selling points of Okinawa tuna are:
1 It is fresh not frozen
2 That can eat different types of seasonal tuna throughout the year
3 There has not been much time since it caught from the time it is bought
Recently the brand “Okinawa Churaumi Maguro” start and has been doing PR all over Japan for the fresh tuna of Okinawa.
At 5 in the morning along with the sound whistle, the tuna auction starts. If you make a reservation before had you can watch so try it out.
After the auction, you can go to “Maguro-ya Honpo” a fresh tuna restaurant which starts from 6am. On that day I had the new dish “Japanese salt wasabi tuna steak bowl. It was a great way to start the day. They also have standard dishes like tuna bowls, and tuna onion bowls.
Having fresh tuna after watching the tuna auction felt so lavish. You can enjoy sightseeing in Okinawa from the first thing in the morning.
Other than the auction there are days where you can enjoy tuna dissection shows ay Tomari Iyumachi. You get to see a dynamic knife take apart a tuna in a flash. The surge of energy in the room is amazing!
Go to Tomari Iyumachi and try the fresh tuna of Okinawa.
