Nichi Nichi So (Naha): Delicious Sweets that Delivers the Love and Warmth of the Creator♪
post : 2018.10.25 15:00
“The confectioneries that I make may be delicious, but no matter how hard I try, they can’t be compared to the creations of a qualified patissier,” says Ms. Keiko Shimoji. This humble lady has been creating cakes and custard puddings for over ten years in her home/confectionery factory in Urasoe City.
What started as a hobby got her deeper into the world of pastries. At first glance, her creations are not especially eye-catching, but they certainly taste great and leave a strong impression. Her sweets have that special homely allure, like the sweets mothers make for her children.
“It would be wonderful if I were able to create beautiful cakes like the world-class pattisieres, but…” she says, modestly. To this, her husband Hideki Shimoji says, “You just keep being yourself, and let your own colors shine. It’s not necessary to compare yourself to others, and there are so many customers who love your confectioneries. Have confidence and continue your challenges with your own original tastes and ways.” He has nothing but great things to say about her and her creations.
It’s Hideki’s job to go to various events and set up shop to sell their goods. Before, he worked in a completely different field, but then he fell ill. After recovering, he decided to start anew in Keiko’s field and they have been great partners in business since. At numerous events, he’s met by loyal fans of Nichi Nichi So, as they welcome him and the treats with the words, “We always look forward to finding you,” and “We couldn’t wait to see you!” He says the kind words from the customers really keep him going.
They sell a great variation of sweets, like Gateau Chocolat that’s made with a generous mixture of chocolate and cocoa; Beni Imo Crumble Cake, which brings the pride of Okinawa, the Beni Imo purple potatoes to the center stage; the Kugani Imo Cake created with the orange colored Kugani potatoes or golden potatoes which is a specialty product of Ikei Island; and of course, their popular Rich Cheesecake.
The treats all have that delicious homemade look and taste which you won’t find in the fancy cake shops around town.
One of the favorite cakes of the Okinawan people is the German Cake. At Nichi Nichi So, they’ve added an original touch to create the German Style Gateau Chocolat. The aroma and texture of the coconuts are wonderful, and the cake is also another popular item.
In the Kwatchi Contest, a food/recipe development contest focusing on using mulberry leaf powder, Keiko’s Mulberry Leaf and Avocado Cheesecake won second place in the November 2015 contest. Mulberry leaf powder is a specialty product of Okinawa Prefecture, and the dough is mixed with this healthy powder.
Her creation brings together the mulberry leaves which are known to contain rich amounts of vitamins B1, E, carotene, iron, calcium and others, and the avocado, a fruit in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the most nutritious fruit in the world. A cheesecake created from such ingredients is simply bursting with nutrition and has a very deep flavor and a smooth texture that cream cheese alone can’t deliver.
There are repeat and regular customers who stop by for the Custard Pudding and Pumpkin Pudding. A spoonful of these sweets spreads a gentle warmth from your palate straight to your heart.
Up until August of 2016, the goodies from Nichi Nichi So were only available at their booth at various events, but now with their shop along Heiwa Dori in Naha, customers can stop by for their favorites. The couple still want to focus on delivering treats to people who look for them at various events, so the shop is closed irregularly, especially when there are various events over the weekends across the island. The shop is open more regularly on the weekdays, so when you’re strolling along Kokusai Street or by the Makishi Public Market, I recommend you stop by Nichi Nichi So for their lovely pastries.
