Mabuni Fire and Bell Festival Praying for Peace for the New Year
post : 2014.11.16 16:00
Every year from December 31st to January 1st the “Mabuni Fire and Bell Festival” is held.
It is not a lively festival. Mabuni, Itoman has the ‘Cornerstone of Peace’ and was a battlefield during the Battle of Okinawa which now has the Okinawa Peace Prayer Hall.
During World War II there were land battles in Okinawa, and Mabuni was the last site of a bloody battle. On the night of New Year’s Eve, a lot of people gather at the Peace Prayer in Mabuni to pray for peace and light torches to comfort the souls of those who lost their lives in battle.
Fire is said to have image of life and a blaze called the “Sacred Fire of Prayer” where people one by one light each others torches and it looks like there are passing on life and peace from heart to heart. You can get a view of the miraculous beautiful scene.
Elderly men and women who experienced war and young folks who haven’t, people who ages and nationalities are different get together at Mabuni, and at midnight they bring in the new year and pray for everlasting peace as the “Peace Bell” rings.
It is an event that I would like more people to go to even if it is just one more person
