The section of books on Okinawa on the second floor of JUNKUDO, Naha Shop has a large collection of “local own books” about Okinawa, to which new books are added one after another. It is located in a good spot along Okiei-dori Street with easy access from Yui-rail “Miebashi Station” to Kokusai-dori Street, please visit the store at the beginning of your trip to Okinawa.
According to Ms. Noriko Kagawa, who is in charge, they directly purchase from more than 100 publishers instead of using general distributors. “Different aspects of Okinawa, which are not shown in any guide books” are introduced in a number of books here to provide you a great stimulus to make your trip more unique and enjoyable. Yet because of the overwhelming number of about 18,000 books and their deep contents, you can spend hours in wondering the hallways. If you are a booklover, you might want to bury your head in a good book that you've been wanting to check out. I asked Kagawa-san and the manager of Naha Shop, Mr. Mihito Hosoi, to show some of their own recommended books for our readers.
The first one is “Ryukyu Kingdom You Can Learn From Illustrations / History and Famous Figure,” which has been selling well since the first volume appeared at the store. Historical construction including Shuri Castle look full of life. “Things That People on Mainland Japan Don’t Know But Everybody in Okinawa Know / Tourism Guide on U.S. Bases in Okinawa” has also been a brisk seller. In the light of understanding unique culture and climate of Okinawa by knowing historical background, “Welcome to The Period Before Reversion to Japan – Nostalgic Okinawa Photo Studio” and “Okinawa Phantom Photo Studio” are recommended as well.
Mr, Hosoi recommended “You cannot run a company with “Nankurunaisa (Do the likeliest, and God will do the best)” spirit.” He said, “The content is a serious business book, but the title is excellent.” He is right. Just taking a look at the title makes you laugh, agreeing to it. His another recommendation is “Obaa (elder lady) Times,” which is awarded for the category of local book in “The 1st Okinawa Bookstore Awards.”
“Obaa Times” is a four-frame comic strip that has lasted for 10 years in a local newspaper “Okinawa Times.” Episodes in the early period when the comic strips appeared in the evening edition became a book, which let you feel a relaxed air of daily life in Okinawa.
In addition, there are a variety of books and photo books that cover the traditional handcrafts or marine life in depth. Meeting a book here will surely lead you to the door to “Your only experience that you can do only in Okinawa.”
