A Café Where You Can Smell The Sea Breeze, “Hamabe no Chaya”
“I want to let everyone see this view.”
With that pure idea, the café “Hamabe no Chaya” opened as a “location café” 20 years ago. It is so popular that people line up at lunchtime.
During high tide the breathtakingly beautiful view of the emerald green ocean outside the window frame will make you feel like you are drifting away. During low tide, you will have the completely different view of the endlessly reaching seaweed. The counter seats by the window are the most special seats, but the trees filtering the sunlight on the open terrace and the rooftop terrace where you can feel the sea breeze with your whole body allow you to enjoy a different place each time you come.
When asked about the recommend time to come, the store manager Inafuku said in the morning and in the evening. “In the morning there are not a lot of people and the distinct atmosphere of the tropics and the sea breeze is comfortable. There are a lot of customers who come alone. I also recommend the distinct atmosphere at sunset.”
The wooden structure, that seems to extend out into the ocean, was hand built by Inafuku’s father, who is the owner, and his friend.
Inafuku’s father was the president of a civil engineering company and worried about construction methods that destroy nature, so he aimed to build a café that makes the most out of nature just as it is. “The store had been destroyed by a typhoon once before. But choosing to coexist with nature means you have to be prepared for nature’s harshness as well.
From Inafuku’s word, you can get a glimpse of the 20 years of effort behind the beautiful view of emerald green.
That effort is also put into the food. In the café you can have food like the popular pizza made with locally produced seasonal vegetables and sea grape salad. The fried taimo is especially popular and has the moistness of taro along with of sweetness of sweet potato to give a rich flavor.
If you take a short break, you can enjoy the sounds of the waves while walking on the beach.
This café is so charming that if you come here once, you will want to bring other people to see the beautiful view.
If you go and say you saw the café on Okinawa Clip, you will receive a special Hamabe no Chaya postcard!
